There have been several PoW Camp 16’s in addition to this site. However, this site within Shropshire was likely the first.
The site as visited was at the location specified by English Heritage and consists today of what appear to be the remains of a small quarry within woodlands accessible via a public footpath and close to a rail line.
The camp history is complex in that it was initially used as an Interment Camp at the start of the war then became for a short time a PoW Camp. The camp was reported as closed when the airfield RAF Tilsock was built. However, that RAF Airfield was a War Time Construction Airfield as such whilst the Landing Strip would have been built to the same standard as PreWar Airfields the Accommodation and Technical Sites would have been built as dispersed sites away from the Airfield. This site may or may not have been used as one such dispersed site but its location is slightly odd as being next to a rail line but not close to a road way.
