Asfordby Hostel is an interesting site in that it was built as a Heavy Anti Air Gun site. Presumably to protect not just nearby large town Melton Mowbray, but also to protect the nearby Royal Navy Battleship Ship and other Gun Test and Proofing Site.

Towards the end of the second world war the number of German Air raids fell off and obviously stopped completely following the end of the War in May 1945 With this many of the guns were simply withdraw leaving behind various Nissen Huts, and other standard Military buildings and fixtures. With the end of the war and the surrender of the German forces the UK repatriated most of the Italian PoWs simply to take room for German PoWs being shipped to the UK not just from Europe but also from the USA and Canada. As a result of this PoW numbers in the UK reached the peak point of over 400,000. This led to many sites such as Asfordby being employed as Hostels with German PoWs being employed on local farms.

The site as it exists today simply consists of an old Pillbox as a reminder of what was once there
