PoW Camp 616 Barkby Lane is an interesting site in that it was built as a Heavy Anti Air Gun Site as per that at PoW Hostel 94 Asfordby near Melton Mowbray.
Towards the end of the second world war the number of German Air raids fell off and obviously stopped completely following the end of the War in May 1945 With this many of the guns were simply withdraw leaving behind various Nissen Huts, and other standard Military buildings and fixtures. With the end of the war and the surrender of the German forces the UK repatriated most of the Italian PoWs simply to take room for German PoWs being shipped to the UK not just from Europe but also from the USA and Canada. As a result of this PoW numbers in the UK reached the peak point of over 400,000. This led to many sites such as Barkby and Asfordby being employed as to house PoWs being employed on local farms.
Today this site has been totally cleared as can been seen by comparing the images shown here along with the preserved England From Above image. One final note; this site is 1.5Km from my home in Thurmaston
