Drone Operation Inside an MEZ with Permission

This site is located in the corner of field used to graze sheep just of the A1065 and within a short distance of RAF Mildenhall. From Google and OS Maps faint traces of the hut bases and what looks like a hut has been retained although this was not visible from the main road. Part of the site is some form of fenced in Water Treatment Site.

I stopped at the entrance to the compound and took a few photos with my DSLR Camera, after which I took out my Drone Camera with the intent of taking a few images of the site using the drone. I did this in main because of a combination of the weather and that at the time I was not able to walk from the field entrance to the site of the former camp owing to back pain.

On switching on my drone I found out for the 1st time what happens to drones activated within a no-fly zone – as I said I was not too far from Mildenhall. UK Law and regulation with regards to small drone cameras is such that they should not fly 400 ft above ground level and that they should not fly close to airports and or military bases and prisons etc.. I found early on that to fly over the 400ft with the current DJI Mavic Pro 2 all you had to do was to alter the maximum altitude present. Well in the past I had flown close but outside a designated no fly area when at Kings cliff. At this site I was within the no-fly zone for RAF Mildenhall. The Drone control software informed me of the restriction and then offered me the opportunity to unlock the restrictions – this is something I would not do in these circumstances my background is on of Military Aviation and my last job before I took early retirement was on the design team of the UK Watchkeeper UAV to say that I understand the issues involved is an understatement. Oddly enough what I wanted to do would have been safe, however, it simply is not worth it.

In the end I hired a Commercial Drone Pilot and between us we obtained permission and shot drone images during the US Thanks Giving Holiday.
